About the Latvian National Guard Orchestra

The chief and conductor of the Latvian National Guard Orchestra - Captain Andis Karelis. Today, there are more than 60 musicians in the National Guard orchestra.

Tasks

The main task of the orchestra is to promote the Latvian National Guard  in the society of Latvia, as well as to perform in various events organized by the Latvian National Guard and the Latvian National Armed Forces.

History

There are mainly young adults playing and singing in the Latvian National Guard Orchestra. The orchestra was founded by Major Viesturs Lazdiņš and Captain Andis Karelis on November 1, 2011.

Achievements and Collaborations

The National Guard orchestra has taken part in many different city festivals and public events, such as the Father’s Day, and the Breast Health Support March in Riga, and events held by the State Blood Donor Centre. The orchestra has won the Grand Prix in wind orchestra competitions ‘Cēsu Kauss’ 2014 and 2015, as well as the 1st place in the Lithuania’s Open wind orchestra championship in Šiauliai, 2016. Furthermore, the National Guard orchestra has provided support for the XI Youth Song and Dance Festival of Latvia. In November, 2017 the National Guard orchestra big band visited and performed in Helsinki in honor of Finland’s centennial. Both the National Guard orchestra and big band create concert programs together with the National Guard choir ‘Stars’, as well as various solo artists and composers. In July, 2018 the orchestra collaborated and performed together with the Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces during their visit in Latvia. Moreover, the National Guard orchestra participated in the XXVI Song and XVI Dance Celebration honoring the centennial of Latvia.

Year 2018

The year 2018 has been full of events, new collaborations - musicians from the Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces and the 126th Army Band of the Michigan National Guard. The Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces together with the Latvian National Guard Orchestra performed concerts in Latvia. Furthermore, the Latvian National Guard Orchestra ensamble visited Canada, and the whole orchestra visited Michigan, USA and performed in many different concerts. The orchestra also have bright memories from participating in the XXVI Song and XVI Dance Celebration. Moreover, the Latvian National Guard Orchestra had the honour of marching for the first time in the grand military parade in honour of the 100th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia.
